Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
